5 a.m. (a poem)

I wrote this poem back in 2014 when I was waking up for a shift that started at 6am, what was I thinking?! You can see how it affected my attitude….

5 a.m.

5 a.m.

A half asleep alarm clock mocks the morning

My own mind, motionless

As if taking my first breath, my eyelids rise

Hesitant and fearful

There’s no light before them

The Sun has yet to show its brilliance

If only I had the choice to remain nesting

But the day calls prematurely

And my every sense rejects its beckoning

Within a moment

Against my will

Life begins turning again

Ripped from its nest

And my body is dressed again

My clothes snag on its whirling

And I'm dragged off to business beneath life
