We just got our first snow here in Montana, at least at the elevation in which I live. The mountains have been sparkling for some time now.
This piece “Beside the Trail” is a summertime painting! In fact I almost got sunburned while creating it. I first saw this gathering of colors in the rain, everything surrounding this beautiful spot was almost frosty up in the mountains of Wyoming, it was rather cold, too cold for my fingers to be painting. There’s nothing like rain to bring out the colors and give me a poetic feeling. I love the rain!
My husband and I were in the area of Alta WY for about a week and as the end of the week approached, so arrived perfect painting weather! The whole week was devoted to music, art and culture! Even as I painted this piece I was surrounded by so many wonderfully happy people passing to and fro, for I really was on the edge of a trail. In the distance I could hear my husband in a group of musicians playing their bluegrass tunes!
We were at Targhee Resort in Alta, WY for a music camp and bluegrass festival, it proved to be so much fun! Surrounding us were beautiful displays of flowers and stunning musical originals filling the air everywhere you went, even groups of talented children fiddling and singing! Pure cuteness!
Each spot you turned there were different flowers with different color combinations, I especially liked this one, the 2 tones of purple with white and black! We have the Fire Weed here (Fusha), the Larkspur (dark purple), the Angelica (white), and one of my favorites, the Western Cone Flower which never has any petals at all! (Black).
Although I began this piece Plein Air, the week of fun was up before I could paint in the flowers so I finished them at home. I can’t help but wonder how differently they may have looked if I had gotten to paint them on the spot.
My favorite part about painting this piece were all the people walking by on their way to their camps. At first I was actually afraid to set up in such an obvious and highly trafficked spot, “what will the people think of me? Will they think I’m trying to get attention?” I came to the conclusion I didn’t care, I just wanted to paint my flowers!
