Ballet Painting Series

True title of series to come soon, more paintings are complete and will be uploaded soon! 3rd official series

Matilda loves dancing! Live music is her favorite place to dance but she also enjoys taking ballet lessons.

This series explores the beautiful movements of ballet, while touching on the art form’s rigidity. Borders and boxes give us a balance of being told how to move, and the personal touches which can only be so slight. Ballet almost takes away what dance truly means for Matilda personally as it requires following set in stone patterns and choreography created by another. All this by memorizing the steps, which takes your brain into a different sort of "flow" than "letting loose" would.

Regardless the movements of ballet are large and bold, they require a whole floor of space and often include jumping and spinning, which is quite obviously exhilarating!

To Matilda, dance is all about getting outside of parameters and not thinking at all about what your body looks like, rather just letting it move in its own natural way. Therefore she uses ballet as a way of learning rhythm and beauty to bring into her other dancing outside the ballet studio.

"An empty self, suspended in chaos"

I was inspired to illustrate the above phrase which was given to me while waitressing. An easy place to feel empty and unseen.

Although I always did my best to stay present with others, waitressing felt unfulfilling at times. I usually enjoyed it, but sometimes it would get to me. I know that in this current season of my life I am meant to be working on my art fulltime. Which is why I recently made the decision to lower the prices on my art. Because I would rather sell work faster and get to paint more, then not get to paint as much because I have to work a part time job.

I really did like some things about waitressing and learned so much from it, maybe I'll go back one day. But this piece is not really about that, that's just one experience that made me feel empty. I hope this piece of art does more to illustrate daily life that can be chaotic at times, but yet somehow, we made it through and here the proof! Here's a reminder of how we felt at one point, desperate with no life, and now we can look at it with a new perspective. Stepping back and seeing from the bigger picture. Turning those emotions into something tangible that I can be seen and digested. We don't have to hold sorrow; we can release it now. Now is the time.

I made a lot of space for negative emotions this summer; space to process and then let go. Creating art like this can be a purge of energy. Then in the end, it gets covered in glitter! Turns out a mess can be beautiful. Afterall, we've grown and learned so much, we would never have had it play out any other way.
